Scott “Burt’ McCarthy
Scott “Burt’ McCarthy of Clinton, formerly of Mississauga, passed away peacefully, with his sister Donna and best friend Steve by his side on Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, at Victoria Hospital in London at the age of 63.
Predeceased by his parents Ron and Jacquie McCarthy and his sister Diane McCarthy, Scott was the loving brother and friend of Donna (Dan) Taylor. In-laws, aunts, uncles and cousins of the Green and McCarthy families all survive Scott.
Scott was a quiet and private person with a wry sense of humour. Still, he had many friends, all of whom will miss him dearly, particularly his Mississauga friends, Bill, Heather, Mariya, Rob and Sylvia, his college roommates Steve Bunn, Bill Devine, Scott Nellis and work colleagues, Gerry Parrott, Alyssa Ambrose and April Neary.
His family will remember Scott as a kind person and a superb athlete, excelling at every sport he tried. He truly was an amazing goaltender and a great golfer. He loved golfing at Woodlands Links in Clinton, where he felt like a member for years before he became one.
His work colleague and friend Gerry Parrott shared the following: “Over the last week since I shared the sad news about Scott’s passing with his colleagues, many anecdotes have been shared. It wasn’t hard to pick up on a theme. Dedicated. Hardworking. Smart. And never, ever did he say no. Except if there was a golf game to be had or a Leafs game to watch! Sometimes, but rarely, did that take precedent over work.
“And who did everyone want to train them? Yes, Scott. Why? Because of his kind demeanour, soft-spoken words and friendly approach. All new staff loved it when Scott could train them, not only because of his demeanour, but because he knew his stuff.
“Many good times were had over the years - there were many fond memories having a cold beer and chicken wings after a long hot day in the field - I think Scott and I helped to keep the local pub in Belleville in the black for at least two summers! And who could forget Scott’s laugh? Like his character and wit, it was understated, yet sincere and knowing. He knew. And his smile and approach made others feel comfortable. We will always remember Scott fondly - a true gentleman.”
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of his life will be held later. In lieu of flowers and as expressions of sympathy, donations to Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy, Clinton Public Hospital Foundation or KidSport Ontario would be appreciated.
