Arlene Green
Arlene Green of Wingham, passed away at Wingham and District Hospital on Thursday, July 21, 2022. She was 77.
Arlene was the beloved wife of the late John Green who predeceased her in 2020. She was the devoted mother of Sherry and Doug Shiell, RR5, Wingham and Kevin Green, Wingham; the cherished grandma of JD and Kate Shiell, Matt Shiell and Shannon Wilhelm, Ryan Shiell, Shaelin Green, Shelby Green and Spencer Green and the great-grandma of Tatum and Cayson Shiell and Gracelyn Shiell.
Arlene was the dear sister-in-law of Aileen Wilkinson, Rhonda Green and Fred de Boer and Terry and Lisa Green. She will be lovingly remembered by her nieces Ann, Marilyn, Tara, Darcy and Keri as well as special family Debbie Hodgins and Jake and Stephanie Eishenhofer. She was predeceased by her parents George and Marguerite Wilkinson, brother Ken Wilkinson and parents-in-law Cecil and Florence Green.
Arlene was born in Flesherton on Jan. 7, 1945. She married the love of her life on Feb. 23, 1963. John and Arlene moved to Paisley for the first few years, then bought the butcher shop in Wingham from Percy and Jean Deyell in 1971. After two more moves and many expansions of Green’s Meat Market, they finally “semi-retired” in 2005, after serving the needs of Wingham and area for over 30 years.
Arlene’s love of her family and her horses (not necessarily in that order) and her love of their farm was undeniable. John and Arlene’s entire lives were spent working and playing together, whether it be camping, trail rides or travelling. They were involved in many organizations, including the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association, Gypsy Campers, and Chesley Saddle Club.
Over the years, Arlene’s strength and independence was put to the test many times with keeping up to John, handling long-horn cows during calving and battling and winning her fight against cancer in 2009. The last two years without John had definitely been Arlene’s hardest battle and without that bonded strength she wasn’t able to overcome her latest hurdle. Arlene was a dedicated, hard-working, loving friend, mom, grandma and great-grandma and there will never be a day that goes by that she is not thought of with fondness and dearly missed by all who knew her.
A public visitation was held at McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham on Tuesday, July 26. A private visitation by invitation only followed until the time of the private funeral. Interment took place at Wingham Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Wingham and District Hospital Foundation – Oncology Unit or the Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association would be appreciated.
